  1. I was not expecting this episode to be the episode you guys spend 3.5 times parsing through the episode for the key. Hopefully looking for the key doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of the episodes for you.

  2. It was killing me how they did not realize how the Stans have different names with Grunkle being presumably Stanford and the license plate saying Stanley, even Calvin mentioned both names. They were so confused, I blame the search for the cipher. Lol

    1. It’s obvious in hindsight of seeing the show but not when the first time you see it. I’ve seen the show numerous times and I hadn’t even noticed that.

  3. What makes this episode so amazing is that it is, essentially, the lynchpin of the entire series. The entire show so far has been leading to this reveal.
The big mystery behind Season 1 – who is the author?
Season 2’s mystery – Who is Stan?
Most shows would focus just on the mystery and reveal, making it the bigger part of the episode. While certainly a huge component, the actual FOCUS of the episode is on emotional weight. We see the kids slowly wrap their heads around Stan maybe not having their best interests at heart, and as all the evidence is piling up, as Dipper goes deeper and deeper in on not trusting Stan… Mabel does.

It’s a beautiful moment, Mabel, a painting of trust held aloft in a rainbow glow.

I won’t lie, I still shed a little tear all these years later.

The storyboards on this episode are top of the class, done by the magnificent Sabrina Cotugno (Owl House, Star Vs Storyboards) Dana Terrace (Owl House, creator), Luke Weber (SU, RWBY, Ben10), and Alonso Ramirez Ramos (SU, Micky Mouse). I don’t think Not What He Seems would be half as good without them.

I’ll be reposting this comment under the YT video when it gets released, too, for the engagement.

  4. The ending with them sitting on the swings still feels so haunting even after watching this entire show before.

  5. Loved the reaction but… pls do key searches after the discussion! Things are only gonna get crazier from here on out and hearing your immediate thoughts is what’s really interesting. Like it kinda felt like the discussion for this episode lost some steam by the time we got to it and, believe me, you’ll want an unfried brain for what’s to come.

  6. Trust is one of the most fundamental themes of this show. The first thing Dipper reads out of the journal, is “trust no one.” This entire show is constantly yelling at the audience “NOT WHAT HE SEEMS!” Stan can’t be trusted, he’s a liar, a grifter, a professional con man, he might not even be their uncle. He is not what he seems! Mabel, however, is trusting, she sees the best in everyone and despite everything telling her that Stan is the enemy, she knows that he is her family, and that she can trust him.

  7. Going back to ep 19 of season 1 (dreamscaperers) after watching this episode is both rewarding but also very misleading. Yes, there are glimpses of stan’s brother in the memories, but other pieces of those memories have been openly retconned in the second season. There are plenty of fan theories out there to explain the differences between memories in an in-universe way, but the creators have stated that things Were changed
